TFT Set 17 Augment Selection Strategy Guide

Augments are permanent bonuses granted to players at three critical intervals during a match: Stage 2-1, Stage 3-2, and Stage 4-2. By altering basic game rules, granting items, or boosting combat stats, Augments define the identity of your composition. In TFT Set 17, selecting the correct augment requires you to balance your current board strength with your long-term economic plans. Here is our strategic guide to augment selection.

The Three Augment Tiers

Augments appear in three distinct tiers, each with its own power levels and game impact:

  • Silver Tiers: Offer subtle utility adjustments, minor combat stat boosts, or small economic packages. While not game-defining, a good silver choice sets a clean foundation.
  • Gold Tiers: The most common tier. Gold augments offer significant trait boosts, major economic packages, or unique combat mechanics.
  • Prismatic Tiers: High-impact game changers. Prismatic augments can completely shift the meta of a lobby, offering massive item packages, instant emblems, or high-risk economic gambits.

Combat vs. Economy Augments

Augments generally fall into one of two strategic roles. Balancing these roles is key to securing consistent Top 4 finishes.

1. Economy & Utility Augments

These augments grant gold, experience, item components, or shop refreshes (e.g. Rich Get Richer, Clear Mind, Trade Sector). They do not make your units fight better during combat, but they allow you to reach higher levels faster or hit 3-star upgrades cheaper.

Rule of Thumb: Taking an economy augment on Stage 2-1 is highly effective, as it gives you the resources to build a long-term advantage. However, taking an economy augment on Stage 4-2 is risky, as opponents who select combat stats will overpower your board in Stage 5.

2. Combat Stats & Trait Augments

These augments directly increase your units' damage, health, shielding, or crowd control (e.g. Cybernetic Implants, Healing Upgrades, Trait Crests/Hearts). They are essential to win late-game fights where boards are capped.
For example, having two combat augments in the late game allows your 2-star carries to defeat opponent boards that have 3-star units but lack combat augment support.

The Selection Framework by Stage

Structure your selection process based on the match progression:

Stage 2-1 (The Foundation)

Choose augments that open up directions. Economy augments, item component grab bags, or flexible trait hearts are excellent. Avoid picking highly specific trait augments unless you already have multiple copies of that trait's units on your board.

Stage 3-2 (The Stabilizer)

By Stage 3-2, you should have identified your final composition. Choose augments that solidify this path. If you are playing an AP carry composition, look for magic-amplifying combat augments. If you are behind on HP, choose a utility augment that grants immediate power to help you survive.

Stage 4-2 (The Cap)

Stage 4-2 is almost exclusively reserved for combat scaling. Select augments that maximize your carry's survivability or tankiness. Avoid economy augments here unless you are rich and need the extra gold to hit Level 9 or 10 to lock in a Legendary board.

Conclusion

Augment selection is about balancing greed with survival. Recognize what your board needs: resources to scale, or combat stats to survive the next round. Check augment placement statistics regularly, adapt to your HP pool, and lead your army to victory.
